Cute Christmas Dog Bowl Mat:
Simple DIY For the Kids to Make

Today, I’m sharing my secrets to creating the most adorable (and dirt-cheap) Christmas dog bowl mat that’ll make both your pup and your holiday decor go “WOW!”

Okay, I’m a dog mom, But I’m also a cat Grandma. And, YES, these also work well under cat bowls!

Family Craft Bonus: Creativity Unleashed!

This project isn’t just about making a cute dog mat – it’s a secret weapon for family fun!

Got kids at home? This is your golden ticket to quality time, creativity, and confidence-building.

Imagine the magic of letting your little ones design a special mat for the family pup.

They’ll beam with pride as they create something both functional and festive, learning that their creativity can bring joy to the whole family (four-legged members included!).

Pro Tip: For younger kids, you can be the cutting assistant while they design. Older children can take on more steps, turning this into a confidence-boosting craft that teaches planning, creativity, and giving.

It’s a win-win: a personalized pet accessory and a chance to watch your child’s creativity shine!

The Craft Magic: Your DIY Superhero Project

Today I’m introducing you to the ultimate crafting project: the pet bowl mat. These babies have every crafter’s favorite superpowers:

  • Cheap: We’re talking dirt cheap. Most of these mats come in at around $1 – yes, you read that right. One. Single. Dollar. If you have even a smidgeon of a craft stash.
  • Quick: From start to finish, you’ll be done faster than your dog can wag its tail.
  • Easy: No advanced crafting skills required. If you can hold a marker, you’re overqualified.
  • Infinitely Customizable: Your creativity is the only limit. Holiday theme? Yep. Match your kitchen? You bet. Expressing your dog’s unique personality? Absolutely!

And as cute (or sophisticated, or chic, or dramatic — you choose the adjective) as can be!

Who said being festive and functional had to be complicated (or expensive)?

This is the third craft foam pet placemat that I’ve shared, and is the fastest and easiest to date!

It all started with this chinoiserie-inspired one, and then this Easter/Spring decoupage version.

What You’ll Need

(Spoiler: Probably Stuff You Already Have!)

  • 12×18 inch craft foam (your new crafting BFF)
  • Markers (Paint markers, Sharpies – whatever’s hanging out in your drawer)
  • Creativity (100% free and always in stock!)

The Inspiration Behind the Pet Place Mat

A festive table setting featuring red plates, silverware, and crystal glasses on a red tablecloth. A "Ho! Ho! Ho!" card is held by a white ornament. Greenery and plaid accents decorate the centerpiece alongside candles.

This year, I’m all about a Christmas theme that screams “Cozy Holiday Fun” – we’re talking red, black, and white plaid with a dash of jingle bells.

Think cozy cabin meets modern festive vibes.

And the best part? The dog mat is gonna match our Christmas table like they were separated at birth!

After all, he’s a member of the family! Doesn’t he deserve a matching placemat?

Yea! I thought so, too!

A feeding mat with black and red stripes holds two bowls: one empty white bowl and one filled with brown pet kibble. The mat is on a brick surface and features a simple illustration of two cats in the corner.

Let’s Get Crafting
(It’s Easier Than Wrapping Presents!)

Step 1) Foam is Your Foundation

Grab that 12×18 inch craft foam.

Yes the crafting darling of 2nd grade classrooms and every VBS program across the country has been promoted to star status in the hub of your home – the unsung hero of pet accessories!

Why craft foam, you ask? Let me break down the magic:

  • Budget-Friendly: Craft foam is crazy cheap. We’re talking pocket change level of investment.
  • Noise Ninja: Say goodbye to the annoying clang and rattle of bowls on hard floors. This foam has a sound-dampening superpower.
  • Anti-Scoot Technology: No more chasing water bowls across the kitchen floor like you’re playing some bizarre pet-themed hockey.
  • Floor Protector Extraordinaire: Waterproof and ready to defend your precious wood floors from splashes, spills, and slobber.
  • Easy Peasy Cutting: Regular scissors are all you need. No special tools, no fancy cutting skills required.

Size flexibility is the secret sauce! I mean who doesn’t love a custom fit, right?

These mats are more adaptable than your pup’s favorite chew toy.

Just trim them down with ordinary scissors or connect multiple pieces with duct tape on the back.

Your mat, your rules – make it fit your space and your furry friend’s dining style.

Step 2) Rounded Corners-

Let’s elevate this mat from basic to brilliant.

Grab a glass or can from your kitchen for your step 2 sidekick — a magic template for perfectly rounded corners.

Two hands are seen in the image. One hand holds a glass jar on its side atop a white sheet of paper, while the other hand uses a pencil to trace around the jar's rim—crafting a pattern for a DIY Christmas dog bowl mat on a gray marbled surface.
A person holds white paper, carefully cutting it with teal-handled scissors on a gray marble surface, crafting a DIY Christmas decoration. The focus remains on the skilled hands and the meticulous action of cutting.

On the backside, trace around the glass with a pencil at each corner, creating smooth, professional-looking curves.

When you cut along those lines, you’ll transform your craft foam from a plain rectangle into a pet accessory that screams “I’m not just a DIY project – I have design goals!”

PRO TIP: Slow and steady cutting is the key to those Instagram-worthy rounded corners.

Step 3) Marker Magic- From Table Setting to Dog Bowl Mat

Now for the fun part – making this mat uniquely yours! Raid that drawer full of markers, paint pens, and Sharpies.

PRO TIP: Be sure to use Permanent or oil-based markers.

Use what you’ve got! No need for a Michael’s shopping spree.

Sometimes the best design inspiration is right in front of you – in this case, literally on my dining table!

If you caught my “19 Best Easy + Thrifty Dining and Kitchen Christmas Decor Ideas”, you might have noticed the charming holiday sentiment cards at each place setting. They could also be place cards.

Well, meet their adorable canine cousin: this dog bowl mat!

Hands holding a white ornament are seen in front of a place card with "Merry & Bright" written on it. The card and ornament showcase festive red and black plaid patterns, adding a cozy touch, much like your own DIY Christmas dog bowl mat for your furry friend.

See the resemblance? This dog mat is essentially an oversized version of those place cards – just scaled up for my furry friend’s dining experience.

Start with a test run on the mat’s backside or trimmed off corners pieces. Think of it as a creative warm-up before the main event.

A person decorates a DIY Christmas dog bowl mat with red and black stripes on a piece of white paper using a thick black marker. Their hands are visible, skillfully creating the festive pattern on the mat, which rests on a gray surface.

Ready to go, I started by drawing intentionally imperfect lines in red and black up one side and across the top to form a plaid corner.

While I kept the sentiment text off the dog mat (because let’s be real, Grittles isn’t reading fine print, even though he definitely knows how to read a room for treats), I wanted to maintain that festive, personal touch.

A large white jingle bell is nestled among green pine branches and frosted twigs, resting on top of a black and white plaid blanket. The scene evokes a festive and cozy holiday atmosphere.

The empty corner was begging for a design, and that’s when the centerpiece came to the rescue. Those classic white and black jingle bells? Pure inspiration gold!

A person traces a small metal cup onto paper with a pencil, perhaps beginning a DIY project for a festive Christmas dog bowl mat. Their hands, adorned with a gold ring, are visible against the backdrop of striped fabric at the top of the image.
A hand holds a pencil sketching two overlapping spheres on a white sheet of paper, perhaps designing a DIY Christmas dog bowl mat. A striped fabric lies nearby, ready to bring the creative vision to life.
A person is drawing a bell on paper using a black marker. The paper, possibly for a DIY Christmas project, has red and black stripes at the top. A pencil lies nearby on a metallic table surface, perhaps to sketch out ideas for the festive dog bowl mat design.

And such a simple design!!!

Jingle Bell Design Breakdown:

  1. With light pencil, trace two circles using a narrow glass
  2. Sketch curved “belly bands”
  3. Add cute top loops and bell openings
  4. Trace all with a fine-tip marker

A white placemat with festive red and black stripes holds two ceramic bowls on a brick floor. One bowl is empty, while the other contains dry pet food. A sketch of two bells decorates the corner of this DIY Christmas dog bowl mat.

Design Inspiration Hack: Look around your holiday decor for ideas. Sometimes the perfect design is hiding in plain sight – like those centerpiece bells that became the star of my dog mat’s design!

Here’s a quick video to show you just how easy and quick this dog place mat transformed.

A Word of Warning

Prepare for compliments. Your friends will be asking, “Where did you BUY that?” And you’ll get to drop the mic with, “I MADE this. For a dollar. Boom.”

Please Pin so you can find this again, others can find it (and yes, it helps me too, THANK YOU!):

Final Thoughts

Crafting isn’t about perfection. It’s about fun, creativity, and maybe saving a few bucks while making something awesome.

Your dog doesn’t care if your lines are perfectly straight – they just care that you made something special.

Okay, maybe they just care that you fed them.

Now go forth and craft, you pet parent, you! 🐶🎄✨

My Favorite Crafting Tip Ever: The best DIY projects start with what you have and end with a whole lot of love!

Wishing you the very merriest of holidays seasons!!!
