Ideas & How To Style Your Christmas  Stockings Like a Pro

Do your Christmas stockings need a bit of OOMPH

Let’s give your stockings the attention they deserve — more than they usually receive!

In this post, we’ll explore creative ways to style flat stockings and add a touch of personality to your festive mantel. This post is all about styling the stockings themselves, once you have them hanging.

A festive fireplace mantle decorated with six Christmas stockings labeled "mama," "olivia," "madi," "logan," "kate," and "carolyn." The styling of Christmas stockings features a mix of red and green, filled with small gifts and topped with holiday greenery and ornaments.

As a seasoned Christmas Stocking Professional, Better Homes & Gardens publications has come to me three times for help with stockings, I have my favorite ways of hanging stockings.

HINT: None include a chorus line of individual stocking holders. And none include Command hooks or any brand of adhesive hooks for that matter!

Start by visiting these posts for all the tips, tricks and creative ways — and places to hang your stockings. Whether or not your living room is your perfect spot, whether you have a fireplace mantel or not, I am loaded with ideas for your ideal Christmas stocking display.

First things first, plan where and how you’re going to hang your stockings. A good starting point is my eBook, and this blog post if you don’t have a mantel. and or this one if you do.

Then Plan Your Stocking Styling

Two white Christmas stockings hang from a mantel, showcasing expert styling. They are adorned with white buttons and a subtle decorative trim. One stocking is filled with evergreen branches and pinecones. The background features white tile and molding, creating a classic holiday scene.

Whether I am styling my stockings for my home or for my photographs, I use several tricks that I have developed over the years.

Whether store-bought stockings, faux fur or  knit stockings, traditional stockings, or even plain stockings, styling them is a great way to add an extra dose of holiday spirit to your decor.

A decorated fireplace mantel displays nine neutral stockings, each styled with greenery and tags. A lit fire burns below. The mantel is adorned with small Christmas trees and a wreath with blue and white ornaments, evoking a cozy holiday atmosphere perfect for styling Christmas stockings.

And it doesn’t matter if the perfect place to hang your stockings is a mantle, a coat rack, or even a tree branch.

NOTE: Step 1 and 2 do BEFORE you hang your stockings. Any filler goes in AFTER they are hung.

Step1) Start With the Stuffing-

Flat stockings, whether they hang droopy or stiff, they always look a bit sad to me.

I think stockings with some stuffing to play up their 3-D form is such an easy way to add an extra touch of style. And it’s FREE!

A cream-colored Christmas stocking with three buttons on the cuff is filled with and surrounded by crumpled plastic bags, showcasing creative ideas for styling Christmas stockings. The arrangement is set against a plain white background.

You need something to gently stuff your stockings. You can use tissue paper, but I like to use plastic bags.

I’ve been using the same bags for over ten years. I flatten them and store them right with the stockings.

You determine how much stuffing you like. Just a bit in the foot or do you like some all the way up like I do?

Step 2) Add Some Weight-

Weight? What?

Yes, you want a bag of weight in the heel to keep the stocking more upright. A handful of florist glass or pebbles tied into one of the grocery bags will work.

PRO TIP: But if you are using on a door, fill a small bag with sand, flour or rice. The soft weight will keep the stocking from swinging too much AND protect the finish of your door.

My magic formula, is typically:

  1. 2 or 3 bags in the toe and arch
  2. Drop the weight in the heel
  3. Then 5 to 7 bags up the leg

This is the easiest way to make such a difference in your stocking display, right? As we know, the little details are often the ones that count!

Two cream-colored Christmas stockings hang side by side from hooks on a mantel, showcasing elegant styling. Each stocking has a cuff with a light gray accent, adorned with three white buttons. The stockings feature a subtle, textured pattern. The background shows a light-colored tiled wall.

You can certainly stop here. But, why?

Let’s go for the wow!

I love to add a touch of holiday decor to our stockings to really elevate them.

A row of gray and white Christmas stockings hang from a beautifully decorated fireplace mantel. Each stocking is uniquely patterned and filled with greenery, capturing the art of styling Christmas stockings. One stocking also holds a small teddy bear. The mantel is adorned with festive ornaments and greenery.

Everyone’s will be a bit different, if your stockings are very ornate already, simple green clippings from your yard (bundled together with florist wire or tape), might be enough.

But if your stockings are more on the plain side, you can really experiment with some creative ideas and different colors.

If you change your holiday color scheme from last year? Neutral stockings can easily transition to a new look just by the styling you add.

Have fun with this and let your personal style show.

Tags with names including Ethan, Chloe, Daniel, Amelia, Jack, and Harper are attached—perfect for styling Christmas stockings.

Or you can go all out with berries, baubles and bows.

Four decorative Christmas stockings hang from a white mantel adorned with green garland and twinkling lights. The styling Christmas stockings are intricately designed with various patterns, bows, and golden star ornaments, each filled with plush toys and glittering ornaments.

Maybe tuck in a small wrapped box as a teaser of what’s to come.

Take cues from your whole Christmas stocking display, for ideas to include in the stockings. Perhaps greenery picks that complement a garland or wreath.

Pinecones are easy accents for a nature or rustic themed display.

Perhaps stuffed stars and snowmen made from an old sweater.

And don’t forget the name tags and their style too!

In general, think of the top of the stocking like a flower pot or window box. Those include a thriller, a filler and a spiller.

Or in other words, you want a focal point and then some  supporting characters with a cohesive look, but also contrast for interest.

Two white Christmas stockings hang from hooks, attached to a mantel, with green foliage peeking out of one. The textured pattern, grey trim, and buttons on the folded cuffs add to the festive ambiance. Styling Christmas Stockings like these creates an elegant and joyful holiday scene.

Start with the back layer, typically, the tallest of your filler.

Here I used 2 small green picks.

Two cream-colored Christmas stockings hang from hooks, showcasing a perfect example of styling Christmas stockings. One is filled with decorative greenery and berries. The quilted texture and button accents near the cuffs add charm as they hang against a white, tiled fireplace.

Then for a second layer, I added a bit of color and shine with some beaded picks.

Next is the focal point — or statement piece.

In this case I dry-brushed the tips of a couple of pinecones with a bit of metallic gold paint and tucked them in front.

Don’t forget a name tag!

All done!

A quick pause to ask if you’d like more help pulling together a fabulous Christmas stocking display that perfect for your home and your style?

Great! Let’s work through it together — in five steps, in five days!

Now back to a sampler of stocking styling ideas.

Feeling Unsure? Heres a Great Starter-

A split image: on the left, two candy canes rest on white fabric next to a small spool of thread; on the right, a white stocking adorned with pinecones, greenery, and candy canes highlights the art of styling Christmas stockings as a festive decoration.

Go with the tradition of candy canes peeking out of the top of the stocking, but make them big, fat peppermint sticks and tie your stockings with big, fat satin ribbon.

Sooooo many options and here is just a small sampler to get your creative juices flowing:

A collage image showing two parts: the left displays a green decorative sprig with berries, and the right shows a cream-colored Christmas stocking adorned with green ornaments and a tag labeled "Mom." The sprig adds a charming touch to Styling Christmas Stockings.

Two images show a small brown stuffed dog with a pine cone and a white decorative snowflake. In the second image, perfect for styling Christmas stockings, the stuffed dog, pine cone, and snowflake are placed inside a white Christmas stocking with button details, hanging against a light-colored wall.

A two-panel image showing holiday decor. The left panel features pine cones, evergreen sprigs, and blue-berried twigs arranged on a white surface. The right panel displays these items styled inside a cream-colored Christmas stocking with a name tag that reads "John.

On the left, an arrangement of dried leaves, berries, and dusty red pomegranates lies on a flat surface. On the right, a beige, button-adorned Christmas stocking filled with similar dried decorations hangs against a light-colored wall—perfect for styling Christmas stockings this festive season.

A photo split into two sections. The left shows pinecones and sparkly round ornaments scattered on a white surface. The right side features a stylishly arranged white Christmas stocking with pinecones and ornaments inside, hanging against a light-colored background.

Of course, this all gets dumped on Christmas Eve to make room for Santa Claus and his elves to deposit their bounty of surprises for Christmas morning.

Excellent ideas Diane! I hadn’t even thought of “filling” my stockings before Christmas. Now I’m so excited about that, as well as the stealth mantel topper! 😉 Thanks so much!
