Welcome to the Pinterest Challenge Christmas Homes Tour.

Through the rest of the year, we meet monthly to all interpret and reimagine a shared image. It’s always so fun to see what each gal creates from the same inspiration.

But this month, we are instead sharing our homes and how we each chose to decorate our own homes.

Did you come from Carol at Blue Sky at Home? Wasn’t her primary bedroom and bath so pretty and cozy? However you found your way here, WELCOME!

I’m all about keeping decor easy and inexpensive, yet stylish. I love to makeover and reuse decor in different ways again and again.

And today, I’m thrilled to share 19 tips with you today from throughout my small kitchen and attached dining area — after all isn’t that where everyone ends up hanging out? So let’s do just that!

This year, my holiday decorating journey took an unexpected turn.

After a couple of seasons of soft, muted tones, I was craving something bolder – and ended up with an injection of vibrant Christmas red, dramatically contrasted with crisp black and white.

It all began with a serendipitous find: a stack of plaid plates at The Dollar Tree last year, whispering promises of festive cheer.

Then, during one of my recent thrifting adventures at my favorite secondhand store, I discovered a gorgeous plaid shawl that seemed to be the missing piece of my holiday decorating puzzle of creating a space that felt both cozy and classic, modern and timeless – without breaking the bank.

A festive dining table decorated for Christmas with red and white plates, glasses, and napkins. Pine branches and large white ornaments run along the center, surrounded by candles. A "Merry & Bright" card is placed on the table.

I was ready to transform my kitchen and dining area into a festive wonderland that celebrated the joy of the season, all while staying true to my love of budget-friendly, creative decorating.

My Christmas decorating challenge this year was simple yet exciting: create a festive, magazine-worthy look using almost exclusively items I already owned, with just a few strategic additions from thrift stores and the Dollar Tree.

It was like a creative puzzle – how could I reimagine my existing decor and breathe new holiday life into my kitchen and dining area without spending a fortune?

The 19 Easy + Thrifty Christmas Decorating Ideas

Let’s Start With the Dining Table-

1) Mis-matched Dishes-

A festive table setting with red and white plates, a plaid napkin, and crystal glassware. A white ornament with a "Ho! Ho! Ho!" card is placed on the plate, surrounded by greenery and a plaid blanket.

This is nothing new, but this demonstrates how inexpensively you can set a table, when you don’t need to buy a full matching set of china. Those plaid dinner plates were $1.25 each last year at The Dollar Tree. The red salad plates were a thrift store find several years ago.

Psssst: That long banquette seat is filled with stacks and stacks of fun dishes from garage sales and thrift stores.

2) Personalized Place Settings-

A festive table setting featuring red plates, silverware, and crystal glasses on a red tablecloth. A "Ho! Ho! Ho!" card is held by a white ornament. Greenery and plaid accents decorate the centerpiece alongside candles.

Those white ornaments were purchased last year when Hobby Lobby started their holiday at 90% off. They are slightly irregularly shaped with a flat bottom. Kind of a cross between an ornament and a snowball.

The gold ornament topper is a split ring so it perfectly holds holiday sentiments like I made this time, but next they may be holding place cards. I extended the plaid theme by adding a touch to these cards.

TIP: They are also fun sitting atop the wine glasses.

3) Simplified Napkin Styling-

A festive table setting showcases a red plate on a white and plaid napkin. A white ornament with a "Merry & Bright" card tops it off. The display, enhanced by greenery and plaid decorations, embodies cozy Christmas kitchen ideas perfect for the holiday season.

This table has a lot going on, so I eliminated a layer with no placemats.

And the napkins? No fancy folds here – just layered napkins for an effortless, relaxed holiday look. Plus the white napkins provide a visual break between the red salad plates and the red tablecloth.

4) Mantel Box Centerpiece-

A festive centerpiece perfect for Christmas kitchen ideas, featuring greenery, a black-and-white plaid cloth, decorative sleigh bells, candle holders with red berries, and candles on a vibrant red table.

A wooden box I made several years ago for a mantel display became the base for a quick and easy centerpiece, proving that sometimes less is more. I’ve also used it for a buffet table.

I made the original taller dark one for a wedding reception of a dear friend.

5) Thrifted Scarf as Table Topper-

A large white jingle bell is nestled among green pine branches and frosted sprigs, resting on a black, white, and red plaid fabric. A clear glass is partially visible on the red cloth underneath.

That plaid shawl I mentioned? It was $4.50 and became the perfect table runner, adding a pop of color, cozy texture and my thematic pattern of plaid.

I’ve done this quite frequently. I used a gauzy shawl as a table topper for last year’s Thanksgiving table, and two overlapping shawls for this pie party.

Now Onto Above & Around the Table-

6) Chandelier Greenery-

A black metal chandelier with five candle-shaped bulbs is adorned with greenery, white beads, and red ornaments. In the background, Christmas kitchen ideas come to life with a tree and a "Peace on Earth" sign adding festive charm.

My dining room chandelier got a quick holiday makeover with some greenery I already had. A few sprigs of faux evergreen, carefully draped and tucked, instantly gave the space a festive feel. No purchasing required – just creative placement!

I added a few cranberry ornaments to mimic there cranberries in the candle vases.

I could have easily stopped there. The third layer of the white wood bead garland is certainly not necessary, but as I was playing, I really liked how it echoed the white “snowball ornaments” and the large white bells in the centerpiece.

So they stayed.

7) Thrifted Sign Makeover-

A decorative sign with the words "Peace on Earth" in white letters on a black background, framed in wood. On the right side, some greenery is visible, giving a festive touch.

Several years ago, I found a pair of glittered herb artwork (honestly!!) at my favorite thrift store.

I knew they could become a great pair of signs for Christmas that I’ve used above the mantel and then on the stair landing.

All it took was untwisting the wire in each corner that held the sign onto the corrugated backers. I flipped the signs over, painted the vintag-esque background and then cut a stencil with my Cricut for the text.

This year I am using them again in a completely different place. They fill the empty space above the banquette back perfectly!

8) Wreath Artwork Connector-

A wall decorated with two signs and a wreath. The left sign reads "Peace on Earth" and the right sign reads "Goodwill to All." The wreath, adorned with a black and white checkered bow, hangs between the signs.

This space above the banquette is very long and rather short. So it requires long, short artwork that has presence!

Usually, a large colorful pear painting (in blues, greens and coral) hangs here.

I adore “my pears”, but not with the holiday table I had in mind.

So we carefully took her down and have given her a holiday break.

A wreath made a great connector between the two signs. It adds some additional texture. And the large ribbons hanging vertically give it a bit more height.

9) Banquette Pillow Swap-

Festive couch with a Santa-themed pillow featuring a painted Santa face. The Santa pillow is surrounded by solid red and patterned cushions.

Just like on your couch, switching out regular throw pillows for more festive options instantly transformed the seating area.

Transition Between Dining & Kitchen-

10) Strategic Red Accent-

Festive kitchen nook with a mug rack, decorative red and white plates, cutting boards, and holiday decor, including a nutcracker and a sign reading "Merry and Bright." A red pillow with white patterns and greenery adds a cozy touch.

By replacing a blue plate on my plate rack with a red one, I created a visual connection between the kitchen and dining areas, letting the eye dance between spaces.

Pull a primary color and shade from your color story and repeat it to lead the eye throughout and beyond the space.

11) FREE Boxwood Wreath-

A white shiplap wall displays ceramic mugs with motivational words like "Shine" and "Create" on wooden hooks. A small wreath and ornament add decorative touches. A round red and white plate is partially visible at the bottom.

Using branches from outside and some wire, I created a wreath with zero cost. It hangs on my mug rack for an unexpected touch of greenery.

12) Ornament Accents-

A wreath decorated made of fresh boxwood is hanging on a mug wall. A copper bow provides a loop for a vintage bird ornament to hang from the same peg. Nearby, white mugs with text hang on hooks.

A special, sentimental ornament found a new home hanging on my peg shelf, adding a touch of holiday sparkle to an otherwise ordinary space.

Still deciding if I like them together on one peg, or to each their own.

13) Tiered Tray Transformation-

A festive kitchen display featuring a nutcracker, wooden tree, "Merry and Bright" sign, pomegranate, and cranberries on a red cloth with a reindeer design, all set on a marble countertop. A small green plant adds a touch of freshness.

Do you have a tiered tray — or two collecting dust in the closet-basement? Did you ever think of taking them apart?

I dismantled this tiered tray to use the largest tray individually for a decorative vignette on my kitchen peninsula. I have also taken it apart to use the trays independently for a holiday buffet table.

Just cover the holes in the center with a napkin or dish towel as I did here.

Please Pin it to Remember it:

And In the Kitchen

14) Shelf Styling-

A cozy kitchen shelf with three wooden buoys labeled "Joy," "Merry," and "Peace." They are decorated with festive greens and small ornaments. A cutting board with an orange, a glass oil bottle, and a light fixture are also visible.

My open kitchen shelves became a Christmas canvas.

Since the kitchen window looks out over the lake, I chose to use these Christmas buoys I made several years ago right next to that view.

The remainder of the open shelves are brightened with a few red transfer ware dishes getting mixed in with my collection of white. Tuck in a few sprigs of greenery, a Christmas plate, some red, and a bauble or two – instant holiday magic.

15) Natural Fillers-

A festive arrangement in a glass vase with layers of cranberries and faux snow, topped with evergreen branches, pine cones, white berries, and sparkly baubles. The arrangement is set against a light-colored wall.

Cranberries and rock salt from my pantry became instant decorative fillers in a clear hurricanes on a candleholder. They hold the stems in place beautifully. I’ve done this many times with just rock salt.

But when my local Walmart had bags of fresh cranberries for .10 each, yes 10 cents, I decided to try alternating layers of cranberries and rock salt to bring the deeper red from the dining area into the kitchen.

Did you notice I also did this in tall clear vases to hold candles in the centerpiece box?

Yep, the vases hold candles and the candle hurricane holds Christmas florals. Call me a rebel.

16) and 17) Wreaths Everywhere!

Two white cabinet doors are decorated with festive wreaths made of pinecones and frosted green branches. Each wreath is centered on a door and attached with a red ribbon, adding a touch of holiday cheer to the space.

Quite a few years ago I purchased this pair of wreaths at JoAnn’s (during a Doorbuster special of course) for the pair on the cabinet doors above the fridge.

A cabinet door is open, secured by green tape at the top. The door has a simple rectangular design and is attached with metal hinges. The ceiling above is textured, and there are visible shelves below.

They are so easy to hang using two strips of painter’s tape on the inside! No need for expensive command hooks.

A winter-themed wreath with green foliage, pinecones, and red berries hangs on a white louvered door. A pink ribbon is tied in a bow at the top, securing the wreath in place.

A companion style wreath hangs on the louvered pantry door by just slipping a length of ribbon between the louvers and tying in a long bow.

The whole kitchen becomes an instant festive friends and family hang out with just the addition of a few wreaths.

18) Basket Decoration-

Woven baskets decorated with red ribbons, pine cones, and fir branches are neatly arranged on white wooden shelves. A partial view of a dish is visible on the bottom shelf.

Simple seasonal elements added to the front of my open shelf baskets – think a sprig of pine, a small ornament, even a candy cane – bring festive cheer to this utilitarian corner.

I first did this for Fall and just fell in love with this simple accent. It makes all the difference!

19) Holiday Dog Dish Mat-

A feeding mat with black and red stripes holds two bowls: one empty white bowl and one filled with brown pet kibble. The mat is on a brick surface and features a simple illustration of two cats in the corner.

Who says pet accessories can’t be festive?

This cheerful mat under the dog’s food and water dishes cost me $1.25 and about 20 minutes.

It instantly added a touch of Christmas cheer to even the most functional corner of the kitchen.

I made a blue and white chinoiserie mat for everyday, and this cute one for Spring and the Easter season.

BONUS: Decorative Butter Pads-

A festive table setting with a glossy red plate, a white bowl, and a plaid napkin. A pine branch decorates the center with a card bearing partial text, "Fal." A buttery spread is served on a shell-shaped dish.

Inspired by my blogging buddy Michele from Vintage Home Designs, I used those adorable bell-shaped ice molds from Dollar Tree to create decorative butter pads.

A red silicone mold with holiday-themed shapes filled with creamy butter. A spoon and palette knife rest on the edge. Nearby is an empty bowl with butter remnants and a stick of butter. Everything is on a marble countertop.

A simple trick: soften butter, pack it into the molds, and freeze.

Shell-shaped white dishes with white chocolate placed inside, arranged in a row on a light surface. A red silicone mold is visible in the background.

Just remember to take them out in plenty of time to reach room temperature before serving.

A festive dining table decorated for Christmas with red and white plates, glasses, and napkins. Pine branches and large white ornaments run along the center, surrounded by candles. A "Merry & Bright" card is placed on the table.

The result? A festive, cohesive space that feels both intentional and effortless. And the best part? I spent mere dollars while creating a look that feels rich and thoughtful.

Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. It’s about creativity, using what you have, and infusing your space with joy.

This year, my kitchen and dining area are proof that the most magical Christmas decor comes from the heart – and maybe a quick trip to the Dollar Tree!

Now it’s time for me to send you on to the sweetest Laura of Decor to Adore. Trust me, you are going to flip over her golden holiday home tour. Be sure to tell Laura “Hi” from me.
