If you’ve already skimmed the Quick How-To above, you know how easy this is.
What follows is simply a bit of context and reassurance—no extra steps required.
Why Calling Congress Actually Matters
If you’ve ever wondered whether contacting Congress makes a difference, here’s what happens behind the scenes:
- Phone calls and emails are the preferred methods of contact for congressional offices.
- Calls and emails from constituents are logged and tallied daily.
- Those numbers are reviewed by staff and leadership—volume matters.
A quick insider note, shared with me by a well-connected congressional staffer:
Physical mail (letters and postcards) all goes through one central congressional mailroom and must pass through extensive security screening—a process put in place years ago after anthrax threats. That means mailed messages can take weeks or even months to be delivered.
By the time they arrive, the vote may already be over.
Phone calls and emails? They’re counted the same day.

How Often (and How Much) Should You Call?
This part is important—and reassuring:
- ✔️ Once per day is ideal
- ✔️ Stick to one issue (two at most)
- ✔️ Focus on what matters most to you or what’s most time-sensitive
You don’t need a long speech. You don’t need to cover everything. Clear, focused messages are the most effective.

Why the 5 Calls App Makes This So Much Easier
The hardest parts of calling Congress are usually:
- figuring out who to call
- knowing what to say
- understanding which issues matter right now
The 5 Calls app removes all three barriers.
Here’s what it does:
- Identifies upcoming and active votes
- Finds your exact representatives automatically
- Provides short, respectful scripts
- Keeps calls to just a few minutes
No research spiral. No guessing. No pressure.

What Happens When You Call (Really)
Most calls go one of two ways:
- You speak briefly with a staffer
- Or you leave a voicemail
Either way, you’ll simply:
- Share your name and ZIP code
- State whether you support or oppose the issue
That’s it. Your position is logged and added to the daily count.

Calling Congress Isn’t About Being Loud
It’s about being counted.
One call.
One issue.
One small step forward—taken at exactly the moment it matters most.

What to Do If the Voicemail Box Is Full
Occasionally, you’ll run into a full voicemail box. Don’t let that stop you.
Next to their number in 5 Calls, click on the little blue “hamburger” (the circle with a horizontal dotted line) and you’ll see their regional offices. You can copy and call any one of those.
Or you can submit your position online. Most members of Congress have a contact form on their official website that allows staff to log constituent opinions just like phone calls.
The easiest approach? Copy and paste the same script you planned to use for your call.
Easiest Way to Submit Your Opinion Online
Find the correct contact form
- For Representatives: use the official House directory to find your representative’s website.
- For Senators: use the Senate website to jump to your Senators’ websites.
Copy the script from the 5 Calls app
This is the same clear, focused message you were going to leave by phone.
Paste it into the contact form
Make small edits if you’d like, but keep it:
- Direct
- Focused on one issue
- Clear right from the subject line
IMPORTANT: Do not bury the lead. If the position isn’t immediately obvious, there’s a risk it won’t be counted correctly.
Fill out the remaining required fields
(Name, address, ZIP code—this confirms you’re a constituent.)
Submit
Repeat for each of your congressional representatives
(Your House member and both Senators.)
HELPFUL HINT: Bookmark the contact forms for your representative and both senators.
If you ever run into full voicemail boxes again, you’ll be able to submit your opinion in just a minute or two—and easily repeat the process on another day if needed.

This isn’t about being loud or perfect or relentless.
It’s about staying present—and choosing not to disengage.
Doing something—anything concrete—can be grounding in ways that sitting with worry or hiding from an issue never is.

Remember, Joy and action aren’t opposites. They often go hand in hand.

Thank you for this. I have downloaded the app and make 3 calls today. I also forwarded your e-mail to 6 other people
Amen, Thanks Diane for this important information. You are so right, it’s a good choice to do something that is purposeful and helpful. If someone is thinking your voice doesn’t matter, It is just a lie, and it doesn’t have to be loud, mean or hateful………………just courteous, direct and honest. My Mom always used to say you can
catch more flies with honey that you do with vinegar.!! lol
Blessings,
Nellie
Diane thank you so much. This was not only a great read and informative. At a time when we all feel so helpless action is needed.
